Summer Term

20.4.18

Welcome back to the summer term.

 

ENGLISH - We have been focusing on reading comprehension and the 4 P's. Presentation, pride, progress and product.   

 

MATHS - We have focused 3D shape and finding missing number questions using the inverse.

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be pages 16, 40, 41, 42 and 43 of the maths reasoning book. Section 2, Non fiction 3 -  'Guide dogs' - pages 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32. This is due back in Friday.

 

Thank you very much for completing the lighthouse activity, the classroom looks amazing!

 

As the weather is getting warmer please can you ensure your child has a water bottle and sun hat in school. P.E kits also need to be brought in.

Spring Term

29.3.18

DT - We had a great day exploring how to make, design and evaluate our own moving vehicles. 

 

MATHS - We have been learning to tell the time this week. 

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be pages 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39 of the maths reasoning book. Section 1, Fiction 3 -  'Anansi and the Turtle' - pages 11, 12, 13,14, 15 and 16 of the reading book. This is due back Friday 20th April.

 

To make our classroom look even more amazing, please can each child make a lighthouse to display in the classroom. This can be brought in after the Easter holidays.

ENGLISH - We have created a leaflet all about Blackrod, for Mr Wolf.  

 

MATHS - We have focused on fractions this week. Finding 1/2, 1/4 and 1/3.

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be pages 20, 21, 22 and 23 of the maths reasoning book. Section 3, Poem 2 -  'The Snowman' - pages 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41. This is due back in  Thursday 29th March.

 

Please can you save and send in small boxes. E.g. Empty drink cartons, fresh orange cartons or any type of box that would be suitable to make a moving vehicle out of. These are to be brought in on Monday. 

 

After half term we will be changing our displays to reflect our new topics. If you have any spare items relating to the seaside, i.e. deckchairs, buckets and spades etc. Please can we borrow them until the end of term.

ENGLISH - we have had a fun week making our own riddles. 

 

MATHEMATICS - this week we have been focusing on position and direction.  

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be, English 'Section 2, Bees' pages 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26. Maths, position and direction, pages 44, 45 and 46. This is due back in next Friday.

 

We had a fun science day on Monday, investigating how germs spread and all about Louis Pasteur. We also investigated if we could change the shape of bubbles. On Wednesday we enjoyed World Book Day and created our own 5 minute stories.

ENGLISH - We started our new poetry topic on riddles.  

 

The children worked extremely hard this week during test week. I am extremely proud of everyone, well done!

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be pages 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the maths reasoning book. Section 1, Fiction 2 'The Ferris Wheel' - pages 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. This is due back in  Friday 16th March.

ENGLISH - the children have worked really hard this week with reading comprehension. 

 

MATHEMATICS - this week we have been focusing on solving maths reasoning problems.  

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be, English 'Section 3, Poem 1' pages 33, 34, 35 and 36. Maths pages 5,6 and 7. This is due back in next Friday.

 

We have started our new topic, What would Mr Wolf find in our village/town?

Yesterday we received a letter from Mr Wolf and the children were very excited. We will now complete our research and create a leaflet about Blackrod to send to Mr Wolf.

ENGLISH - This week we have been focusing on reading a variety of texts and finding information to answer questions.

 

MATHEMATICS - We have been focusing on our written methods to solve number problems and reasoning.

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be pages 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the maths reasoning book. Section 2, Non-Fiction 'The Circus' - pages 17, 18, 19, 20. This is due back in  Friday 2nd March.

ENGLISH - This week we have been focusing on reading and finding information in a text. 

 

MATHEMATICS - We have been using our knowledge and strategies to solve maths problems.  

 

HOME LEARNING - This week's home learning activity will be 'Fiction 1' pages 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the English reading book. This is due back in next Friday.

ENGLISH - This week we have written alternative 'Traditional Tales'. We have read the stories and edited them to make improvements. Then we wrote them again, focusing on the corrections, for display. (Keep a look out for the pictures).

 

MATHEMATICS - We have continued working on tally charts, pictograms and block diagrams.  Children will be bringing home their big maths targets tonight, they are highlighted in green. 

 

HOME LEARNING - As discussed at the SATs meeting, this week's home learning activity will be pages 51, 52, 53 and 54 of the maths reasoning book. This is due back in next Friday.

 

EXCITING NEWS!!!

Today all the children had the opportunity to go to the new library and checkout a book! The children were very excited about this! They can keep this book for up to 4 weeks. If they finish their book before this time they can bring it back and change it.

ENGLISH - This week we have been reading and retelling traditional tales. We have focused on the features of a traditional tale, punctuation and sentence openers.

 

MATHS - This week we have started our new topic, statistics. We have been creating and interpreting tally charts and pictograms.

 

Home learning diaries,

 

1. All children now have, stuck in diaries, the login details for Digimap and Purple Mash.  It would be lovely to see children using these fun resources at home and saving their work.

2. Please can parents and children read and sign the Home School Agreement.

ENGLISH - We have been identifying the features of a newspaper and have used this create our own on, The Great Fire of London. Keep a look out for pictures of the new display.

 

MATHEMATICS - We have continued with multiplication and division, moving on to word problems.

 

As from Monday Y2 will be dismissed at the end of the day through the main entrance of school.

 

We are planning to update our Blackrod Values displays around school. Please let us have any photos of your children displaying any of our values, just as a reminder they are; Aspiration, Success, Bravery, Optimism, Unique, Knowledge, Determination, Leadership, Value, Creativity, Respect, Achievement, Love, Enjoyment.

ENGLISH - We have been focusing on finding information in a text to answer questions and how to use expanded noun phrases.

 

MATHS - We have been working on multiplication and division and how to use the bar model to help.

 

We had a super Geography themed day, check out the class page and twitter for pictures.

 

Home Learning diaries have been sent home this week. Please write comments in the boxes for the relevant week and day, regarding reading and home-learning. At the front of the diary there is a home-school agreement for you to share with your child and sign. Key words will be highlighted for each term when your child is confident in spelling them. Bronze certificates are currently being given out for spelling of key words and we will be moving towards the silver certificate. The maths skills will be assessed at regular points throughout the year with stickers being awarded.

Autumn Term

SPELLING - I have completed a final assessment of the autumn term spellings and I am extremely proud of everyone for all their hard work!

 

HOME LEARNING DIARY - In January, your child will receive a new home learning diary. The diary will have a copy of the highlighted spellings and multiplications your child can do so you can monitor progress.

 

I would like to say a huge thank you for all your kind gifts. It is not expected but very much appreciated. Tank you!

ENGLISH - We have been reading The Owl Who is Afraid of the Dark, this has linked to our science topic on nocturnal animals.

 

MATHEMATICS - This week we have been learning to multiply using equal groups, we have used the bar model to help us calculate.

 

In between learning we have been rehearsing for our nativity. The children all look fantastic and have worked hard! Just to help you position yourself, to best see your child, Y2 will be sat near the Christmas Tree.

ENGLISH - We have been reading non-fiction books and used the information we have found out to write a non-chronological report.

 

MATHEMATICS - This week we have been focusing on:

  • identifying £ and p
  • making an amount of money
  • comparing money

 

Remember to practise your spellings and times tables.

 

Year 2 will be taking on the lead role this year in the Infant Nativity. Look out for costume letters in bags tonight. The children will also be bringing home their lines to learn.

ENGLISH - We have continued our work on calligrams and created a beautiful autumn display.

 

MATHEMATICS - This week we have started to focus on counting pounds and pence.

 

We had an amazing day with our visitor. It was so much fun having a spaceman in school!

 

We are still collecting corks if you have any. Also, as mentioned in the newsletter, if you have  any family photographs that showcase any of our School Values please can you send them into school next week.

Welcome back! I hope you have all had a lovely week.

 

ENGLISH - We have started looking at calligrams and how we can change words to look like what the word means.

 

MATHEMATICS - This week we have been focusing on:

  • number bonds to 100
  • finding 1 and 10 less or more than a number
  • addition and subtraction  

 

Remember to practise your spellings and times tables.

 

For all the parents/grandparents that drink wine, please can you save the cork and send them in to school. We will be using these to make our Christmas decoration.

ENGLISH - This week we have planned and wrote an alternative story, based on The Tiger Child. It was fun thinking of the different animals that could go on the journey.

 

MATHEMATICS - We have continued with addition and subtraction with exchanging. Then we tackled word problems.

 

We had an amazing day for Harvest! It was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents come to share the time with their children, making wonderful memories.

ENGLISH - We have had a week focusing on using punctuation to make full sentences.

 

MATHEMATICS - This week we have been solving addition and subtraction using the tens and ones.

ENGLISH - We have continued work on The Tiger Child. We have been retelling the story and focusing on punctuation.

 

MATHEMATICS - This week we have been looking at the relationship between addition and subtraction for example:

24 + 33 = 57

33 + 24 = 57

57 - 33 = 24

57 - 24 = 33

 

We also had a fun day creating work for our Esio Trot display - check out our Twitter page!

ENGLISH - We have continued work on The Tiger Child. We have enjoyed thinking of adjectives to describe the uncle and create interesting sentences.  

 

MATHEMATICS - We have continued working on place value.

Solving problems and reasoning.

 

As we are still waiting for the new Home Learning books to arrive, a copy of the multiplication card has been attached to reading diaries.

 

In class we have a school jumper and 2 white tops, with no names, if you think they might be yours please come and have a look. Please ensure all uniform is labelled.  

 

We are encouraging the children to read more, therefore, we are trying to create an exciting reading area. If you have any unwanted funky chairs, beanbags, mats etc.. please can we have them.

ENGLISH - We have introduced our class book - The Tiger Child. We have enjoyed looking at where it is set, using the pictures as clues. We have also been working hard, creating super sentences using exclamation marks, question marks and the conjunctions  - and, but, because.  

 

MATHEMATICS - We have continued working on place value.

Identifying numbers in a place value chart.

Comparing numbers using mathematical language and symbols.

 

GEOGRAPHY - We had a theme day focusing on map skills.

Using simple compass language, comparing maps with aerial maps, identifying simple map symbols, locating places on a map and explaining what makes a locality special.
