Class Updates and Home Learning

13th March 2020

 

This week we have been extremely busy doing our assessments alongside enjoying Science Week.

We have had an absolutely fantastic time learning about our Solar System and the position of  each of the planets from the Sun. The children have been comparing Mars to Earth. Please ask the children to see what they can remember, they have been truly amazing at remembering the all the information. Today, we have been celebrating Sports Relief, we have been looking at what Sports Relief is, how it helps people and what we can do to help. Thanks again to parents for their donations.

Thank you for bearing with us while we are assessing the levels and reviewing systems in school regarding reading, the children's books have been given out so please continue to read with your child 3x a week.

6th March 2020

 

 

This week we have been exploring the story 'Beegu' and have explored how this alien might have felt when he landed on earth. We have also been learning about possessive apostrophes and when we might use them.

 

In Maths we have focused on learning our 2D and 3D shapes and have discussed their properties. In Science we have been looking at the properties of different materials and we have been looking at materials that will float and materials that will sink.

 

We had a fabulous day on Thursday celebrating World Book Day and learning about inspirational people.

Please note that we have taken reading books back in from most of the children in school as we are assessing the levels next week, please read library books or your own books in the meanwhile.

14th February 2020

 

What a fantastic week we have had in Gauguin class. We have been working hard in PSHE in the afternoons, looking at how we are all different, similar and what we love about each other. In English, the children used their brilliant imagination to write some fantastic diary entries about finding the Terracotta Warriors. In Maths, we have been looking at measurement and have gone on to look at word problems including measurement.

We have had another busy week of learning this week, In Maths we have been learning to make Tally Charts and Pictograms, we have been amazing at interpreting them. We have also enjoyed learning about The Terracotta Army this week and done some amazing observational drawing on the warriors and have created some brilliant clay sculptures of them too.

 

Practise books have been given out, please do not rush going through these. Little and often is best!

We have had a great week looking further into China. The children have been looking at the different cities in China and finding out their own facts about China.

 

In Maths, we have been finding the difference between different numbers and the children have worked extremely hard finding the difference in word problems.

We've had a fabulous start to our 'I Have a Dream' topic with our learning on Martin Luther King Jr. The children have completed fantastic reports on the events of his life.

 

In maths with are focussing on fractions and the children loved playing fractions bingo. We are continuing to work on fractions next week.

We have a lot of creative learning in store for next week for Chinese New Year and we are going research China.

We have had a great first week back. Our new topics is 'I have a Dream', were we will focus on significant people, events in history and possibilities. The quality text we are covering are in the English section of our class webpage.

 

This week we have continued to learn at Martin Luther King Jr. and are working toward writing our own speeches to inspire others.

 

In maths we are focusing fractions for the next couple of weeks alongside our times tables.

20th December 2019

Our Year 2 carol singing on tour went really well. The children were amazing with excellent behaviour, beautiful singing and wonderful manner. They made us all really proud and set an amazing example for the school. Well done Year 2.

 

We really appreciate our lovely gifts. Thank you for your overwhelming generosity.

 

We hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and New Year.

13th December 2019

 We’ve had an eventful week. All the children were amazing during the winter performance of The Midwife Crisis. Photos have been added to the class page or follow the link below. We also had a chance to practise our carol singing to an audience after Wednesday and Thursday performances, now we are ready for action for our tour on Tuesday.

The week we have been working on our DT project. Our focus is food and the practical skills that are involved with the preparation. This week we have explored hygiene, taste, textured and preparation skills.

Next week we have breakfast with Santa on Monday morning and KS1 Christmas Party in the afternoon, children can wear their party clothes all day.  Year 2 are on tour on Tuesday so the children are in their school uniforms and Forest School on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday school uniform and Friday own clothes.

 

The children have won Times Tables Rock stars again this week. Congratulations! I am seeing increase in their confidence in Maths.  Spelling and handwriting are also continuing to improve so thank you for your support with their home learning.

We've had a festive week practising our winter performance and rehearsing traditional Christmas carols. On the 17th December, Year 2’s are touring the Residential Homes in Blackrod and Horwich singing Christmas Carols. There is a letter in their book bags with the details and I have also attached one at the bottom.

 

This week the children have produced some wonderful writing, recounting the Footprint in the Snow story.

 

Congratulations to Gauguin class, they are at the top of our school league on Time Tables Rockstars and have won the inflatable guitar for a week.

We've have a great week exploring sound and we are continuing this next week with some different experiments. In English we are looking at the book Footprints in the Snow. We have used the book to help us create a story map,  noun phrases and practise our inference skills. Next week we are looking at how to structure a story and alternative endings. In Maths we are working on money; adding the amount to find the value and working out the change.

We have had a great first week back.  We had a visitor from the NSPCC talking about children's rights.

In maths this week we have revisited 2D shapes; looking at the properties. We have also focused on the 3 times table and completed multiplication calculations. This children have particularly loved learning about the Gunpowder Plot; looking at the significant people, the events and why it happened.

 

The children's spellings in Gauguin class are improving significantly improving. I their new home school dairies there are list of Year 1 and Year 2 words for them to continue practising.

All the children have had an amazing half term. To celebrate our achievements so far and share our knowledge about people from the past, we would be delighted to welcome you to our class assembly. 

The assembly will take place on Thursday 21st November at 9am in the school hall.  The children will have lines to practise after half term, so please give them your encouragement at home.

11th October 2019

 

Another busy week in Gauguin Class. We've practised addition and subtraction, and solving missing number calculations. We've looked at natural/artificial light sources and the changes of the moon. We have also continued to learn about plastic pollution and enjoyed our visit from Dr Niall, who answered lots of questions about Greenpeace and pollution.

 

Please continue to use Spelling Shed for home learning, we are having a strong focus on spelling.

4th October 2019

 

This week we have learned about Thomas Edison and his contribution to the light bulb. We produced some wonderful writing, recounting Thomas Edison's life.

We have also looked at Autumn changes around school and produced some amazing noun phrases about Autumn.

27th September 2019

 

This week in Gauguin class we have focused on number bonds to 10 and 20 using different methods such as ten frames, Numicons and bar models. We have also revisited odd and even numbers. We have looked at the different seasons in the UK and next week we will be looking at different climates around the world.

 

The English we have read Night Monkey, Day Monkey and used this to help us complete rhyming strings and our own rhyming sentences.

 

We are having a strong focus on spellings at the moment. Spelling Shed has spellings set for the children ready for them to access at home. If you're accessing this on a PC it works better using Chrome. I have uploaded the Year 1 and Year 2 spellings to the English section of our webpage. It would benefit many children to have additional practise of these at home.

20th September 2019

This week we have wrote some wonderful letters to Greenpeace and we are also enjoying our class novel Flat Stanley, the children did some great work on character description. In maths, we are working on place value and we are securing our number bonds to 10 and to 20.

Next week we are looking at seasonal changes and hot and cold climates.

 

The children now have new passwords for Purple Mash which they can then use for Cracking Comprehension, Spelling Shed and Times Tables Rock Stars.

The PTFA AGM meeting is on Tuesday 24th September, in school @ 6:30pm. Everyone welcome.

We are updating the extreme reading board in school, new pictures needed please.

 

The Book Fair starts on Monday!

 

Next Friday we are having the annual Macmillan coffee morning, in school, from 1:30 – 3:30. Please can donations of cakes, biscuits etc. be brought in to school to help us support this event. It would also be lovely to see many of you in the afternoon.

We've had another great week in Gauguin class. The children have done some amazing work around the book Dear Greenpeace. We have explored the blue whale from the story and we have looked at Greenpeace and what work they do. Next week we are recapping on the features of a letter and writing our own.

We are also exploring seasonal changes and we started by looking at the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo and his paintings using seasonal fruit.

 

We are still waiting for delivery of our new home/school diaries. We will get those out to you as soon as possible.

We have had an amazing first week back.  We have started our Down to Earth topic and have had great fun exploring all the new resources in our classroom and creating our own world maps.
