PSHE & RSE Cultural Capital
Our understanding of ‘knowledge and cultural capital’ is derived from the following wording in the national curriculum:
‘It is the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.’
Ofsted School Inspection Handbook 2019
What is Cultural Capital at Blackrod for PSHE RSE?
At Blackrod, Cultural Capital is seen in the way we incorporate our drivers of Possibilities, Environment, Community and Well-Being, into all of our areas of learning and by striving to provide the children the opportunities to experience and develop understanding of different cultural genres which may not be readily accessible to them outside of School.
PSHE and RSE at Blackrod provides experiences that will allow children to be in touch with their overall well-being by teaching them techniques to cope with different situations, we hope to provide children with possibilities in the world as future careers, we hope to get children more involved in their communities via community events and we hope more children become involved in caring for their environment.
The children learn how to form respectful relationships with others, deal with conflict and bullying and the importance of challenging stereotypes. They develop strategies for looking after their mental and physical health, including: healthy eating, relaxation techniques, sun safety. We feel that is it important for the children to know how to administer first aid in a variety of situations and about safety around medicines, online and road safety and the changes which occur during puberty. We are passionate about development our children citizenship and teach them about human rights and the rights of the child, democracy, diversity and community and protecting the environment. We want to prepare out children for life and possibilities beyond Blackrod Primary School; they will be learning how to make decisions when it comes to spending, budgeting and saving money and exploring different career choices.
