Phonics Offer
At Blackrod, we follow Read, Write Inc which is a DfE-validated systematic synthetic phonics programme with a whole-school approach to teaching early reading and writing. Direct teaching underpins Read Write Inc. It is the quickest route to ensuring all children learn to read and write. Every day, children learn new sounds, and review previous sounds and words. They apply what they’ve been taught by reading words containing the sounds they know in matched decodable books and other texts, and write these sounds in individual words and, later, sentences. When pupils complete the programme, they move on to Comprehension lessons.
Assessment
A critical part of R,W,Inc is the role of the leader who coaches reading teachers and assesses pupils every 6 weeks to ensure progression is being made and pupils are grouped according to their ability.
Intervention
Pupils who are identified as needing further support are taught through ‘Fast Track Tutoring’ sessions. It breaks down the phonics and reading strands of Read Write Inc. Phonics into smaller steps to accelerate children’s reading progress. It provides intensive, targeted support to address specific gaps in a child’s reading.
Red Words
Red words are those words which contain spelling patterns that cannot be sounded out. Some of the most frequently used words in the English language have an uncommon spelling pattern and don't sound like they look, for example, said sounds like 'sed'. Red words have to be learnt by sight.
Green Words
Green words are words that your child will be able to sound out and then sound blend together, using the speed sounds they have learnt. Your child will be able to read a book more easily if they practice reading these words first.
